Accelerating Innovation in Microfabricated Medical Devices

Lay summary

A transformation is underway in European medical devices and services

The 2018 European Strategic Research Agenda for Electronic Components and Systems (ECS) is a combined research initiative comprising three industry associations representing companies of all sizes, universities and research institutes along the entire ECS value chain. Health and well-being is one of its five identified application areas with goals of stabilising costs while transforming healthcare with faster diagnostics, more effective treatments and personalised medicine. The EU-funded Moore4Medical project is leveraging the wide-ranging expertise of 68 partners from 12 countries to develop open technology platforms that will accelerate innovation and applications in ECS for emerging medical science to benefit Europe's citizens, its economy and global standing. The open technology platforms address the emerging domains of: bioelectronic medicines, organ-on-chip, drug delivery, personal ultrasound, radiation free intervention and sleep monitoring.

Abstract

Moore4Medical will accelerate innovation in electronic medical devices. The project addresses emerging applications and technologies that offer exciting new opportunities for the Electronic Components and Systems (ECS) industry. Moore4Medical will focus on the development of open and enabling technology platforms for these emerging fields to help them bridge “the Valley of Death” in shorter time and at lower cost. With value and IP moving from the technology level towards applications and solutions, defragmentation and open technology platforms will be key in acquiring and maintaining European leadership in the forefront of affordable healthcare.
